Maybe you've seen them by now. You know, these crazy SKETCHER shoes that have a really rounded sole that is supposed to help you "roll" through each step. They apparently are the next craze of footwear like Crocs or Birkenstocks. I've seen several people wearing them, mostly more mature folks who are fairly fitness conscious and who are fairly willing to try something new. They...

Today, the April/May issue of "Bowhunter" arrived. It is one of several hunting magazines to which I subscribe. I also have "Turkey Call" and "Deer Hunting". I peruse each issue even though very little of the content is new. They probably recycle the content about every three or four years. Basically, this is my brain candy.
Brain candy isn't nutritious. It's tasty and doesn't have any real substance. It's what you read when you don't want to get too deep. Most television...

Silly Bands
So, my son comes home with a bunch with a bunch of rubber bands that he is wearing as bracelets. "Dad, these things are so cool" he says. I was unimpressed. "Dad, look... they change shapes! See, this one is the letter G...you know.... for GABE!" Still, I was unimpressed. "Ac tually, Gabe, they are silicone, and if they make you happy, I am glad for you. Enjoy."
Now, I see all the kids wearing them. They trade them. They lay them out and look at all the...

Last Saturday, I took Gabe deer hunting. (For you anti-hunters I wish I could leave that part out, but it is pertinent for the purposes of this blog). It was an experience that has challenged my faith since last Saturday. I need your help, so please post a response at the end of this blog (PLEASE!!!).
We arrived at the shooting house about 2 hours before dark and set up for the evening hunt. This particular shooting house is a nice one. It is large enough for two hunters to...

Last night my family celebrated the arrival of the new year with fireworks, family, and neighborhood friends. We recalled the last year and even the last decade. Has it already been 10 years since we were worried about Y2K? Even more interesting was the observation that New Years Eve was a Blue Moon.
Blue Moons are the second full moon in a month with two full moons. They are rare, happening only every few years. The next one won't happen until August of 2012. This one...

So, last Saturday, I found myself watching the SEC championship football game between Alabama and Florida. It was the first time I ever pulled for Florida. Sandra was out shopping and I had a friend over, as did each of my children. The house was buzzing with the playful noises of a house full of children and the moans I made every time Alabama did something right. I only had one rule: NO KIDS IN FRONT OF THE TV!!!! I'll give them an A- for effort.
Near the end of the...

So, tonight I get in from Gabe's baskeball tryouts. Sure, he's one of the preachers' kids, but he still has to try out. There are about six teams for Gabe's age group. The kids got evaluated based on thier shooting, dribbling, ball handling, speed, and other various athletic indicators. They were given scores from 1 to 5. If you did great, you get a five. If you are like me, then well....you get a 1. Anyway, after all the kids are evaluated, the coaches assign thier numbers and come up...

The news didn't bother me personally, but my family got really upset.
Kelloggs Eggos will be in limited suppy for the next year and a half.
Each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday our family eats cereal and milk for breakfast. On Saturdays, I make pancakes for everybody, which usually includes some of the kids' friends who have spend the night at our house. On Sundays, I take the kids to Whataburger on the way to W@W . .... but on Tuesdays and...

So, I'm watching Animal Planet the other night. "River Monsters" is airing an episode about Red Bellied Piranhas. The host was documenting cases of human fatalities in the Amazon at the appetites and bites of these killer fish. It was crazy. This is a church blog, so I will assume that you know enough about Red Bellied Piranhas that you get the picture. (If not, just google them and you will find out more than you ever wanted to know.)
The lazy river looked so calm on the...

So, it looks like W@W will be able to have a Christmas Eve Service at Fish House Restaurant in Pensacola. As a restaurant, this is the only day all year that they are closed. Right now, they think that they are willing to let us come host a Christmas Eve service/services there. This gets me really excited as I think about Jesus being born in a manger... a secular place. ... like Fish House! Our Advent series this year is "From the Manger to Main Street." I think we have the most amazing...

The Kales got to spend some real "family time" this last Saturday carving pumpkins into Jack O-lanterns. I cut the holes, scooped out the guts, and carved the faces taht each of my children had designed for "thier" pumpkin. Sandra cleaned the seeds before seasoning them with butter and Lowry's Seasoned Salt and letting them bake in the oven. Mmmm Mmmm. Tasty! We were so happy. We snapped a few digital pictures and then went to bed for the night.

I am reading Rob Bell's Jesus Wants to Save Christians: A Manifesto for the Church in Exile . As always, I find Rob Bell to be compelling, thoughtful, challenging, and often even amusing. This book is no different. Here are some of my thoughts as I wade through the first few chapters into deeper waters.
The first family (Not the Obamas, but Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel, and eventually Seth... what was their last name anyway?) was a dysfunctinal one. Looks familiar, huh?

Diesel or Gasoline?
Recently, I was on a trip to central Alabama to spend a little time in a tree... with God.... and my bow... ( I digress and I am only on the first sentence of my first blog) While there, I had to fill up my Jeep. The different fuel octane ratings were hand written on little pieces of paper as were the prices per gallon. There were two pumps, one for diesel and the other for gasoline. Normally, the diesel pump handles are bright green or even located on...
